5 Things I Do When I Travel to a New City⁣

Valencia, Spain

1. DETERMINE THE NEIGHBORHOOD TO LIVE

Figure out the most central part of the city. My criteria includes safety, walking distance to stores/cafes, and near a body of water or a park if possible.⁣

2. FIND A GYM

Start by searching for outdoor gyms in the area and I’ll check Groupon too. Groupon is in dozens of countries and has short-term gym deals at a low cost. Sometimes local gyms will offer week passes too.

3. FIND A LOCAL FOODSERVICE

Food prep services are extremely popular nowadays. Many of them take online payment and deliver right to your door. I buy meals in bulk, 10-12 for a week, and prefer local to national chains. If they use plastic I give them back to re-use. Even in the Bay Area, CA, there’s a service for nutritious, well-portioned meals at $6.70 / each. It helps me stay healthy and save money while traveling and removes decision-making about food that creates bad choices.

4. FIND A PLACE TO STAY

The fortunate part of developing relationships in international communities is having people to stay with. In most cities, I travel I have friends who offer up a room or couch. Depending on how long I’m in the area, I might stay there part-time then find an Airbnb for anything over 3-5 days. I like my own space and sort Airbnb’s based on location and comfortability to work. In some of the developing countries, you can find really low daily rates for apartments.⁣

5. FIND A COMMUNITY

After I’m situated, I like to pop into a local community. FB groups, Meetup.com, and co-working spaces are great, but you can find all sorts of things walking around too. My default is to find a basketball court and play with locals or hit up friends from communities like Remote Year or Nomad Cruise.

BONUS!

I look for a cafe with Acai bowls and matcha. I don’t know what’s gotten into me the past few years, or why I’ve become so ‘basic,’ but I go HAM on Acai bowls. It’s more accessible in some countries than in others, but I’m telling you, I have a problem. I’m obsessed.⁣
