How to Learn Languages While Traveling

Have you ever felt stupid not knowing a language in a foreign country?

Te has sentido estúpido por no saber un idioma un país extranjero?

This was a common feeling for me, especially after spending 9 months of the past year in Latin America. It lit a 🔥 under me to start learning, because I was so frustrated at my inability to communicate with locals in their native tongue.

I spoke with Anja Winter (@learngermanwithanja) on this episode of #NomadHacks to learn more about learning languages while traveling:

✔︎ Learn the phrases you say the most and notice patterns by observing locals.

✔︎ Get a tutor/teacher to help hold you accountable and correct pronunciation.

✔︎ STOP trying to directly translate everything.

✔︎ Date someone who doesn’t speak your language.

✔︎ Write down your goals and motivations, you need a WHY for when you plateau.

✔︎ Develop an active learning style, speak in the other language every chance you get.

✔︎ Celebrate small signs of progress, even just a new sentence!

✔︎ Switch your phone settings to the desired, learned language.

✔︎ Use apps: Duolingo Babbel HelloTalk Language Exchange App.

✔︎ Listen to podcasts, radio & watch movies & tv (cartoons) with subtitles.

What other hacks do you use to learn a language?
