How To Handle Loneliness While Traveling

#Nomads are susceptible to periods of crippling loneliness. Solitude, however, also provides an opportunity for intensive self-reflection.

Framing your mindset PRIOR to long-term travel is important:

STAYING IN TOUCH GETS HARDER

Most of us are already bad at keeping in touch with others. When traveling it doesn't get easier. Find communities as you go or join a program like Remote Year. You need genuine human connections in your day-to-day, especially with those who can relate to you.

EXPECT DESENSITIZATION

After being exposed to a variety of stimuli over time, eventually, things that seemed irregular at first become normalized. As you immerse yourself in cultures, realize not only how much you learn about others, but about yourself. Use this awareness to guide intuitive decisions.

FIND HABITS

Commit to practices that you'll do when alone. It helps to feel productive. Whether it’s a hike, journaling, creating art, etc. Find ways to get in touch with how you’re REALLY doing.

Many of us want to travel to experience personal growth, but it requires intention. Re-frame your mindset to see the opportunity it creates in your life and allow alone time to be your teacher. s/o to Matthew and Mexican dog parks.
