What if all your relationships & friendships only lasted a couple of months?⠀
After planting roots in a small beach town (Playa del Carmen, Mexico) just over a year ago, I'm starting to understand a concept I didn't grasp before:
Location Independent ≠ Location Ambiguous
Just because I can live anywhere, doesn't mean I should.
Why?
Community.
For 2 years after leaving Portland, OR in 2018, I struggled with the idea of "community," mainly because I moved to new countries every month.
Having the privilege of being able to live "anywhere" simultaneously creates the challenge of actually choosing.
Sounds like a desirable problem, sure.
But having very few consistent face-to-face relationships because of a transient lifestyle takes a toll on mental health.
It was like every 30 days I had to hit a social circle reset button.
But, I finally found "home," because I finally found a community
Many fellow members of Nomad Cruise, Remote Year, and the Dynamite Circle live here in Playa.
I've connected with others through a shared interest in basketball, plant medicine, art, spirituality, or adventure.
While finding my tribe has been exciting, I've also witnessed a world plagued by the destruction of communities and the normalization of isolation as a fallout of this pandemic.
It's impossible for any of us to live all alone in the universe.
We all need community now more than ever, and it's important we're able to restore our connections with others ASAP.
Without it, there's really nothing else.
